Gertrude DeRaad, 94, of Hudson, formerly of Sioux Center, Iowa died Thursday, January 20, 2011 at the Hawarden Community Hospital following a stroke.
Graveside service will be 11:00 a.m. Tuesday at the Pleasant Hill Cemetery in Ireton, Iowa with Rev. Barb Joy officiating. The Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden is assisting the family.
Gertrude DeRaad was born August 23, 1916 in Platte, South Dakota, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joe Groen. She graduated from teachers college in South Dakota and taught in rural schools in Sioux County, Iowa, including Garfield Township.
Gertrude married Leonard DeRaad February 15, 1941 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They farmed in the Rock Valley, Iowa area until moving to Bellflower, California. The couple moved to Sioux Center in 1985. Leonard died on January 5, 2002. Gertrude has made her home at the Hudson Health Care Center the past few years.
She always enjoyed sewing, going to rummage sales and horse races and visiting with others.
Survivors include two sons, Ronald DeRaad of Newbury Park, California and Steve DeRaad and wife Donelle of Alcester, South Dakota; 4 grandchildren, Ron, Pam, Jamie, and Timothy; 9 great-grandchildren; and nephews and nieces, Frankie DeRaad, Don and Claudia Winterfeld, Ron and Connie Hulshof, Dick and Sheryl Miller, Lloyd DeRaad, and many more.
Gertrude was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and 7 siblings, Margaret, Hans, Edith, John, Betty, Anna, and Hattie.
