John married Gladsie Dean Wainscott on 5 November 1924 at Hamlin, Texas. He was a member of the Woodson Christian Church, and Fort Griffin Masonic Lodge #489 for 65 years. He was also a member of Last Man's Club, serving as the last member.
John served in the U.S. Army during World War I, and fought in seven different campaigns in France and Germany. Upon honorable discharge from the Army, he worked for the Reynolds Cattle Company in Shackelford County. He later homesteaded land in New Mexico while increasing his family inheritance of farming and ranching in Throckmorton County, Texas, where he served as county tax assessor and collector.
He is preceded in death by wife Gladsie, and the couple's son, John Carroll Brockman. John is survived by three daughters - Juanelle Hulse, Gladsie Ann Herring, Betty Daws; three sons - George Brockman, Larry Brockman and Robert Brockman; 19 grandchildren; and 33 great-grandchildren.
