RALPH G. REAMES, SR.
BEFORE HE RETIRED HE WAS A GROCER FIFTY YEARS.
Moving Here in 1894, He engaged in Both Retail and Wholesale Aspects of the Business.
Ralph Gardner Reames, sr., 76, who formerly was in the grocery and allied businesses here more than fifty years, died last night at the home. 5628 Charlotte street. He had been critically ill a month.
Mr. Reames was born in Chillicothe, Mo., and moved her in 1894 from Peabody, Kas. Before 1905, when he became a salesman for the Lipton Tea company, he operated a wholesale candy route here. He worked for the Lipton company about five years, after which he went into the retail grocery business. He owned several stores before he sold the last store, at Forty-third street and Woodland avenue, about ten years ago. After that he operated his own wholesale route until he retired four years ago. About twenty years ago he was president of the Retail Grocers Association in Kansas City.
Mr. Reames was a charter member and honorary trustee of the Paseo Methodist church. Two years ago a plaque was dedicated to honor Mr. Reames for his work as a choir member.
Singing was hobby. He had sung in church choirs fifty-two years. Also, he formerly sang with the Epperson Megaphone minstrels in the old Convention hall.
Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Ruby V Reames of the home; two sons, Ralph Gardner Reames, jr., 39 West Winthrope road, and Virgil E. Reames, San Francisco; two sisters, Mrs. L.R. Minsker, Los Angeles, and Mrs. Walter H. Ward, 3424 Arlington, Ave, Jackson County, and four grandchildren.
Ralph Gardner Reames, jr., formerly was a commercial manager for WDAF. He now is an account-executive with Russell C. Comer company, an advertising firm. Virgil E Reames formerly was employed in the local display advertising department of The Star. He now is controller for the San Francisco Chamber of Commerce.
