MRS. W. T. ALLEN
A SAD TRAGEDY
Mrs. W. T. Allen gave her little five year old son strychnine in a fatal dose Saturday afternoon, about four o'clock, and then took a fatal dose herself, while her husband and two little girls were in Hamilton shopping. The family live a half mile south of the Pleasant Plains Church. Apparently the deed had been premeditated and planned as to details.
Dr. A. B. Lewis received the startling message from her that she had given the little boy the poison and was going to take it herself, for him to look up her husband in town and come on out He tired to dissuade her from the act, but to no avail. He hurridely sought Mr. Allen and told him of the message. Mr. Allen was soon found, and called his wife from Central, she answered in a weak voice, and told him to come on home at once.
In the meantime Frank Stone was hurrying with Dr. Lewis in an auto to the home seven miles southeast of town. When they arrived they found life extinct in both, the boy laid straight and composed on the bed, the mother beside him, clutching the bed rail both fully dressed, and the house in order. The Dr. got into communication with the county officials at once, and Co. Atty. Marlin, Sheriff Woods and Justice of the Peace came out from Eureka, about six o'clock. They carefully looked over the scene and came to the conclusion that it was such a lain case of suicide, that an inquest was unnecessary.
It is probable that Mrs. Allen was mentally irresponable at the time the deed was done. She has been a very hard working woman, trying to help make a home for her family, and the little boy was the idol of her heart. Some weeks ago he had a leg broken that took a long time to heal, and this caused her much worry, although he was now able to play about the house and yard. But however it was, judge, she is in the hands of one who will judge most mercifully.
Mrs. Allen was a member of the Hamilton Camp of Royal Neighbors and carried $1,000 insurance in the name of her two young daughters, age 11 and 13, also had several thousand dollars insurance in other lodges. The funeral was held Monday morning at Pleasant Plains Church, Rev. Houtchens of Neal, being the officiating minister, after which accompanied by relatives and friends, the bodies were brought to the Hamilton Cemetery for interment in one casket and one grave.
