Mildred Irene (Allen) Sherman
Mildred Irene Sherman, 90, former Eureka resident, of Emporia, died Sunday December 1, 1996, at Vintage Manor in Emporia.
She was born January 28, 1906, at Valley Falls, the daughter of William T. and Jessie (Pontius) Allen. The family moved to the Tonovay community in Greenwood County when Mildred was a year old. She attended District 101 Grade School and Hamilton High School.
On June 17, 1925, she was united in marriage to James Gustin Sherman at Eureka. They made their home in the Eureka area where Mildred was a homemaker and worked as a nurse aide at the Lyndon Nursing Home.
She was a member of the V. F. W. Auxiliary. Mr. Sherman preceded her in death on May 11, 1963.
She is survived by a son, James A. Sherman of Emporia; three daughters, Jeane Mautz of Hartford, Hazel Booth of Eureka, and Wanda Lynn of Salina; a sister, Mary Alice King of Batcheloe, La., 10 grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren and 1 great-great-grandchild.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, a son, Robert H. Sherman on November 28, 1987, and a brother, Ivan Allen.
Funeral services were held Thursday, December 5 at the Campbell-Kelley Funeral Home in Eureka with Reverend Daniel Wilson, pastor of the Christian-Congregational Church of Eureka officiating. Interment followed in the Greenwood Cemetery at Eureka.
A memorial has been established in her name with Hand In Hand Hospice of Emporia. Contributions may be sent in care of the funeral home.
