Paul Miles Crosby, age 88, died at St. George, Utah on October 13, 2010.
He was born at St. George, Utah on April 12, 1922, son of Charles Wilkinson and Ida Miles Crosby. He was reared by his grandparents, Arthur F. and Zaidee W. Miles, after the death of his mother in 1928. Paul attended Dixie Junior College from 1939-1941, and received a Bachelor's Degree at the University of California, Berkeley, in 1948, and a Master's Degree from Northern Arizona University in 1967.
He married Catherine Nancy Pitchforth of Milford, Utah at Hattiesburg, Mississippi on August 4, 1942.
Paul enlisted in Company C, 115th Engineers, Utah National Guard, at St. George, 1939. He was commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant at Ft. Belvoir, Virginia, in 1942, and served overseas in the combat engineers during World War II and the Korean War. He graduated from the U.S. Army Command and General Staff College, in 1961, and retired as a Lt. Colonel in 1966.
He taught geology at Dixie College, 1969-1984; was an instructor at Northern Arizona University, 1967-1969; worked on the St. George Planning Commission, 1983-1989; Chairman of the Hillside Review Board, 1991-1999, and was active in the Dixie College Institute for Continued Learning for many years. Paul also enjoyed working as a volunteer with the American Red Cross and Boy Scouts of America.
He was a member of the St. George Elks Lodge No. 1743, and the Chairman of Youth Activities for many years. Paul was Elk's Citizen of the Year, 1988-1989, and Elk of the Year, 1994-1995.
He is survived by his wife, Catherine, St. George; son, Colonel Paul S. (Ivadell) Crosby, USAF-Ret, Battle Ground, WA; daughter, Linda C. Beddow, Richmond, VA; son, John C. (Leslie) Crosby, Tucson, AZ; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Benjamin, Arthur, and Wendell; and twin sister, Edith Leavitt.
Graveside Services with full military honors accorded will be held on Saturday, October 16, 2010 at 4:00 p.m. in the St. George City Cemetery.
