Gordon was born the son of Paul & Edith Widboom Engberg. He grew up on the family farm north of Slayton and attended Slayton High School. On June 18, 1943 he and Caryl Norberg were married at Indian Lake Baptist Church in Worthington, MN. In November 1944 Gordon enlisted in the United States Army and served in Japan. Following his discharge in November 1946 he returned to Slayton and to be with his wife, Caryl. Together, Gordon and Caryl raised their five children on the family farm. In 1960 the Engberg family moved to Worthington, MN where Gordon managed the Worthington Freezer Warehouse until his retirement in 1998. Traveling being one of their enjoyments, they visited family and friends in many states as well as spending several winters in Phoenix, AZ. In 2001 they returned to Slayton. Due to health needs and care Gordon became a resident of the Golden Living Center-Slayton in August 2010. He was a member of Lake Sarah Baptist Church in rural Slayton and served as trustee, deacon and usher.

Gordon & Caryl were the parents of LaVonne (Mike) Holland, Mike, Rich (Dottie) Engberg, and Miriam Engberg. Two sons, Ronald & Larry, preceded Gordon in death.

Gordon's siblings include Eunice (Chad) Rongstad, & Phyllis Mattson. A brother, Leslie, preceded Gordon in death.

Funeral services were held from Lake Sarah Baptist Church in rural Slayton, Rev. John Lassen officiating.
