Caryl was born the daughter of Emory & Ellen Johnson Norberg. She grew up on the family farm near Worthington, graduating from Round Lake High School. On June 18, 1943 she married Gordon Paul Engberg at the Indian Lake Baptist Church in Worthington. Following their marriage they raised five children on the family farm near Slayton until 1960 when the Engberg family moved to Worthington. Caryl worked at J.C. Penney‘s in Worthington until 1998. She and Gordon enjoyed traveling which allowed them to visit family and friends in many states as well as spending several winters in Phoenix, AZ. In 2001 they returned to Slayton. After 67 years of marriage Gordon passed away on September 5, 2010. Caryl remained in their home and was active in her community and church. As a dedicated and active member of Lake Sarah Baptist Church, she served faithfully on many boards and committees. As a member of the Worthington Garden Club Caryl was an award winning floral arranger who also enjoyed sewing and adding to her special collection of dolls and personal treasures. Caryl loved life and lived each moment to the fullest by spending time with family and friends. On January 14, 2014 Caryl moved to Lindenwood Assisted living in Slayton. In May Caryl moved to Our House Hospice Home in Slayton where she passed away at the age of 90.

Caryl is survived by her three children and their spouses, LaVonne and Mike Holland, Rich and Dottie Engberg, and Miriam Engberg, seven grandchildren, Glen Engberg, Holly (Sean) Malikowski, Sarah (Bryan) Schluter, Matthew (Danielle) Holland, Dan (Jesse) Holland, Adam Engerg, and Annie (Michael) Dewan, 10 great-grandchildren, soon to be 11 (August 2014) and one sister, Ruth Widboom and her husband, Darrell and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, husband Gordon, two sons, Larry Engberg (2000) and Ronald Engberg (2009) and two sisters, Darlene Hintgen and Marjorie Anderson.

Funeral services were held from Lake Sarah Baptist Church rural Slayton, MN on June 28, 2014 awith Rev. John Lassen officiating.
