Joseph Franklin "Doc" Bowen was the ninth child, and eighth son born to Stephen Samuel and Mary Permelia Clementine Killingsworth Bowen. He was born in Cottondale, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama.

He married Louisa Janey Matthews at the home of A. J. Burns in Cottondale, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama on 28 March 1869. Their children: **Elliott M (1870-1932) married **Eula Martha Bowen (1877-1948) in 1891. Their children were: Henry (Aug 21, 1892-Aug 22, 1959), who married Odie Merle Heath (Dec 31, 1894-Apr 11, 1979) in 1910; + John (May 25, 1894), **Walter (Aug 28, 1894-Oct 18,1972), who married Abbie May Limmer (May, 1896-Feb. 13, 1981) in 1912; Jesse Franklin (Jan 21, 1901-Oct 15, 1998) who married **Lillie Irene Cowart (March 25,1898-Jan 16,1964) in 1919; **Neal James (Jan 6, 1898-Jan 1, 1935) married Mamie Robbins; Minnie Irene, (Aug 9, 1910-May 14, 2006) who married Vernie Lowrie Reagan in 1935, and **E. M. (Nov 28, 1907-May 17, 1909).
8. Fannie was born in 1873 and died in Bell County.

11. Silas Monroe (Feb. 2, 1881-Jul 7, 1954) married Calia Bolin. They lived in San Patricio County, Texas.

Doc moved his family to Texas along with his brother, James Tinsley Bowen, arriving in Texas in December 1878. They came to Texas to join their sister, Sarah Frances and her husband, William Morgan Jennings, who had already relocated to Texas.

Also traveling with them was a good friend Bill Mathis, the brother of Jasper Newtons wife.
