Louisa Janey Mathews and Joseph Franklin "Doc" Bowen were married in the home of A. J. Burns in Cottondale, Tuscaloosa County, Alabama, before coming to Texas. "Doc's sister," Sarah Frances Bowen Jennings, and brother, James Tinsley Bowen and their families had moved to Texas earlier. They settled in Bell County, Texas. "Doc" is buried in the Donahoe Cemetery in Bell County. He was a CSA Veteran.
Thirteen years after "Doc's" death, she married Charles Thomas ("C. T." or "Colonel Tom") Curtis in 1904. They lived in Waco, Texas, before moving to Tom Bean. C.T. Curtis was a printer by trade, and for many years, he was the editor and publisher of the Tom Bean Times, a weekly newspaper.
