Robert L. Higby Sr., 71, of 828 Grove St., Meadville, died Wednesday, Sept. 29, 2010, at Meadville Medical Center. Born in Townville on July 13, 1939, he was a son of Floyd Higby and Mary Gerard Higby. He married his wife, Anna, in 1988.
He graduated from Saegertown High School. He was a self-employed excavator and did building contracting. He served in the U.S. Navy and served on three U.S. aircraft carriers, one of those being the Intrepid. He was always proud of his service to his country. He enjoyed hunting, driving his tractors, camping, traveling and woodworking. Robert liked to joke around and always had a funny story to tell. He loved spending time with his grandkids and playing games with his granddaughter, Alayna. He was a former member of the Black Ash Sportsman's Club. He was of the Methodist faith.

Survivors include his wife, four children, a stepson, two stepdaughters, 18 grandchildren, a great-grandchild, two brothers, and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; his twin daughters, Jana and Janet, who passed away shortly after birth; four brothers, Ivan, Archie, Leo and Merle Higby; and two sisters, Gladys Raybuck and Lillian May Worley.

The funeral and committal service will be Friday at 8 p.m. at the funeral home, with John Walburn officiating. Full military honors will be conducted by Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2006 Color Guard on Saturday at 10 a.m. at Greendale Cemetery, West Mead Township. Burial will follow.
