CHARLENE MEINTS MATTINGLY, 84, died suddenly September 16 in Memphis . She was born in Grand Mound, Iowa on January 25, 1926 to Henry C. Meints and Clarice E. Meints and was raised on a farm. She attended Iowa State University before moving to Chicago to work during World War II. She met her husband of 60 years, Edward H. Mattingly (middle name Harned), in Chicago while he was finishing his podiatric medical education. They married and moved to Memphis in 1949. Charlene devoted her time to many organizations including King's Daughters, Duration Club, Beaux Arts, English Speaking Union, Knights of the Vine, and Meals on Wheels. Charlene and Ed were avid travelers who spanned every continent except Antarctica . They shared their love of travel with their three children as well as their nine grandchildren. After Ed's passing, Charlene moved to the Village of Germantown where she enjoyed many wonderful new friendships. She also volunteered at the Health Center at the Village. She loved life to the fullest and blessed everyone whom she encountered. Her vibrant and positive attitude influenced and touched all those around her. Charlene treasured being involved with her family and attending all family functions. She was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, Dr. Edward H. Mattingly, and her sister, Betty Sims of Houston , TX . She is survived by her sister, Jo Anne Murphy (Bill) of Denver , CO ; her son, Dr. Jay E. Mattingly (Mindy) of Memphis ; her daughter, Sue Ellen Haaga (Rayford), also of Memphis , and her daughter, Jane Smith (Tom) of Nashville . She is survived by nine grandchildren: Morgan and Cole Mattingly of Memphis ; Dr. Jennifer Haaga Berger (Jonathan), Lindsey, Edward, and Matthew Haaga, all of Memphis ; Whit, Collin, and Spencer Smith of Nashville . Visitation will be held Sunday, September 19 from 4 to 7 P.M. at Memorial Park Funeral Home. The funeral service will be held Monday, September 20 at 10 A.M. at Shady Grove Presbyterian Church. The family requests any memorials in her name to be sent to MIFA or Shady Grove Presbyterian Church.
