Sadly, his mother died soon after giving birth to her second son, James, in 1884. The children were left with various relatives in County Donegal while their father moved to Montréal, becoming a partner in the Renaud, King & Patterson Furniture Company, founded by his brother-in-law William King.
In 1887 John Patterson married Marion Reid Russell, a first cousin of Wiliam King's wife Agnes, and the new couple immediately returned to Ireland to pick up his children and settle in Montréal.
The family lost track of David a decade after his father died in 1896. Two of his sisters were teaching school in Québec but it appears that David immigrated to Washington State about 1906, becoming the manager of a large orchard.
He married Elsie Cunningham Mackenzie née Davis, a widow from England, in 1921 and passed away in 1941. They had no children.
