John Stark Gallup, Jr. was born 16 Mar 1816 in Sheldon, Franklin Co., VT, the son of John Stark Gallup and Eunice Smith. In the early 1830’s the family left Vermont and traveled by inland waterways to Cincinnati, finally moving into Cass Co., MI about 1834.
John S. Gallup, Jr. was engaged in 1836 for 8 months with a party of surveyors to lay out the land between the Fox and Rock Rivers in Wisconsin; in 1838 he returned to the area and staked out a claim 7 miles west of Milwaukee, remaining on it for 18 months.
He returned to Howard Tp., Cass Co., MI about 1840 and lived in Pokagon Tp. from at least 1850 until his death.
He married first Julia[nna] McCoy on 30 Jan 1840 in Berrien Co., MI and had:
