Mary Cecelia Cavenar was a resident of Vandergrift. Her parents were Andrew Joseph Mathews and Mary Victoris Mathews. She was valedictorian at Sugar Notch High School, and she got her degree in nursing from the Scranton State Hospital. She was a registered nurse and worked for several hospitals including Daly City Hospital in Daly City, California, Scranton State Hospital, Scranton, PA, and a private hospital in Santa Barbara, California, where she was a head nurse. She also worked for the Department of Hospitals in Queens General Hospital in Jamaica, New York. She was a member of the Army Nurse Corps, from 1942 to 1946, serviing in World War II. She was stationed in North Africa, Corsica, and Italy.
