George A. Mathews, of Hancock Avenue, Vandergrift, formerly of Sugar Notch, died Friday afternoon at home.
Born Jan 12. 1904, in Sugar Notch, he had resided in Vandergrtft since 1932. He was the son of the late Andrew Joseph and Mary Victoria Estcock Mathews. He was a graduate of Hanover Township High School, Bloomsburg University and Pittsburgh University. He served as the superintendent principal of East Vandergrift schools and Vandergrtft Area high school, retiring in 1966 after 37 years in education. He was a charter member and organizer of the Vandergrift Lions Club, and was its that president. He was an honorary member of Apollo Lodge 386, with 51 years of service.
He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus of Kaki Valley, Council 3174 and was a past grand knight. He was a past recorder and member of Allegheny Kiski Assembly 90928 Knights of Columbus and its honor guard. He was a member of St. Gertrude Roman Catholic Church, and its Holy Name Society. He was a past chairman of St. Gertrude School committees. He was a past member of civil defense of Vandergrift borough and a member of the Vandergrift Draft Board during World War II. He was the past executive director of Kiski Valley United Fund.
He was preceded in death by his wife, the former Mary Catherine Commer, Sept. 4, 1980; brothers, Andrew, Edmund and Joseph; sister, Margaret.
Surviving are a sister, Mary C. Cavane, Vandergrift, brother, Thomas L., Plymouth, Mich.; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be 9 a.m. Thursday from the George A. Strish Inc. Funeral Home, 105 N. Main St., Ashley, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 9:30 a.m. in Holy Family Church, Sugar Notch.
Interment will be in St. Mary's Cemetery, Hanover Township.
