Virgil was born May 14, 1921 in Bogue Twp., Columbus Co., North Carolina to Gaston Henon Ray and Bernice McQueen Stevens. He graduated from Hallsboro High School in 1938. He attended North Carolina State College where he studied aeronatical engineering. In June 1940 he joined the Marine Corps.He was a pilot in the VMF 214 Black Sheep Squadron. He flew an F-4U Corsair and was a wingman for Major Gregory "Pappy" Boyington. Virgil was lost at sea between the Russell Islands and Munde, New Georgia Island while flying a mail run during a storm on October 13, 1943.
