Rich attended grammar school and completed the eighth grade, it appears he was still attending school at the age of 18. The 1920 Census reports that he had attended school within the year and that he was a laborer on a farm, either his father's farm or a horse farm. In 1930 he was working as a truck driver and in 1935 as a bus driver. In 1940 he owned a service station and by 1945 was in the Navy.
Rich married Anna Mae (Hampton) McDade between 1940 and 1950, they had their only child, Dorothy, in 1950 in California. I currently do not know where they were married, in 1945 Rich was living in Florida and Anna Mae in Oklahoma. In 1948 Anna Mae's half brother Cody was living in California, so it is possible that she was also in California at that time. Rich's younger brother Stewart was married to Anna Mae's sister Blanche.
