David A. Jones, 76, passed away peacefully Monday, May 8, 2006, in Houston, Texas, after an extended battle with prostate and bone cancer. He was born January 9, 1930, to E. Earl and Phyllis Mae Jones, in Fond du Lac, Wisconsin, and raised in Chicago. Dave attended public elementary and high school in the city. He graduated in 1947 from Harper High School, named after William Rainey Harper, the founding president of the University of Chicago, and who was instrumental in developing Morgan Park Academy as the preparatory school for the University of Chicago. Dave received a diploma in Bible and theology from St. Paul Bible College, St. Paul, Minnesota, in 1952; an associate arts degree from Wilson Jr. College, Chicago, in 1953; a bachelor's degree from Taylor University, Upland, Indiana, in 1954; and a master's degree in history from Northwestern University in 1955. He continued to take courses at various colleges and universities over the next two decades. He served in the U.S . Army from 1955 to 1957 and was hired as an instructor in English and social studies at Morgan Park Military Academy after his discharge. In addition to teaching, he was, at various times, rifle team advisor, chairman of the English and social studies departments, director of publicity, director of studies, and principal of the summer school, middle school and upper school. He succeeded Ted Withington as headmaster in 1966. Dave served as Headmaster from 1966 until his retirement in 1997. While at the Academy he was also active in numerous educational and civic activities, including service as Director of the Beverly Art Center, Director of the Independent Schools Association of the Central States, a member of the Board of Directors of Washington and Jane Smith Home, and Board President of St. Mary's Academy, Nauvoo, Illinois. He also served as an Elder, Chrisitian Education Leadership Team Leader and Stephen Minister at Palos Park Presbyterian Community Church. Dave was an avid fisherman and Cubs fan, and loved spending time with his grandchildren. He was treasured by many wonderful friends, and the family will be forever grateful to Dave and Lee's new "extended family" at University Place, and the staff at the Nursing Center. Dave is preceded in death by sister Betty Berger, and brother Thomas Jones. Dave is survived by wife Leora "Lee" Sprunger Jones; daughter Crista Kettenhofen and her husband Jamie; son David A. Jones, Jr. and his wife Socorro; grandchildren Jennie Riedinger, Abigail Riedinger, David A. "DJ" Jones III and Katelyn Leora Jones; brother Warren "Nick" Jones; and sisters Phyllis Little and Marilyn Oplinger. memorial service will be held in the Chapel at Grace Presbyterian Church, 10221 Ella Lee, Houston, TX at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 13.
