Leora "Lee" Sprunger Jones, 88, passed away peacefully in Houston, Texas on Friday, January 14, 2011 following a brief illness. Lee was born August 17, 1922 in Salem, Oregon, to Omer Samuel Sprunger and Ella Amstutz Sprunger. Early in her life, the family moved to Orrville, Ohio, where Lee spent her childhood, graduating from Orrville High School in 1940. She was also an active member of Orrville's Christian and Missionary Alliance Church. As a young adult, Lee moved to Chicago where she worked for American Airlines, and continued as an active participant in church music programs and activities. It was at church where she met her husband David A. Jones, whom she married in 1955. With her husband's appointment as Headmaster of Morgan Park Academy (MPA) in 1966, Lee's commitment to community service and her easy graciousness as a hostess became a regular part of the fabric of her life, the Academy, and the Beverly/Morgan Park neighborhood. Over the years, she was active in the Garden Club, the Antique Guild, and the Infant Welfare Society, serving these organizations both as a member and as an officer. She was an inexhaustible supporter of MPA and the Beverly Art Center, regularly opening her home for parties and receptions, participating in the school's Mother's Club, and chairing the Art Center's annual fundraising auction and the school's Salute to Excellence events. In recognition of her tireless community service efforts, Lee was named by the Beverly Review as "Woman of the Year", and was elected to the Morgan Park Academy Hall of Fame. Lee was an avid reader and a dedicated bird watcher, and she enthusiastically appreciated classical music and fine arts. She was a devoted mother, a doting grandmother, and a treasured friend and companion to many. After their retirement, Lee and her husband moved to Houston where they quickly established a new "extended family" at University Place. Lee continued to actively participate in church activities and book club, and was a regular fixture at the wonderful concerts that were available. Lee was preceded in death by her husband, David A. Jones; brothers, Ira and Delbert Sprunger; and sisters, Dorothy Sprunger and Martha Daugherty. She is survived by her daughter, Crista Kettenhofen and her husband Jamie; son, David A. Jones, Jr. and his wife Socorro; grandchildren Jennie Amanda Riedinger, Abigail Anna Riedinger, David A. "DJ" Jones III, and Katelyn Leora Jones; and her sister, Ruthella Zimmerly and her husband Wilbur. A Private Remembrance will be held on Friday, January 28, 2011 at University Place in Houston, and a Memorial Ceremony for friends and family is planned in Chicago this summer. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials be made to Palos Park Presbyterian Community Church, 12312 South 88th Avenue, Palos Park, Illinois 60464.
