His father was Gerhard Luiten and his mother, Anna (Bougard) Luiten. In 1899 they left Minnesota and came to Lincoln County, WA where they had a homestead near Lamona. They had 7 children.

Jake went to elementary school in Lamona.

He was a veteran of World War I.

He married Louise E. Torry 28 June 1924 in Spokane, Spokane County, WA.

They raised their children on their farm at Lamona.

He was a member of the Odessa Masonic Lodge 156, the Liberty Grange of Mohler, and the English Congregational Church.

He had been in poor health since 1967. After being in the Spokane Deaconess Hospital for four weeks he passed away.
