Sherman’s father Julius Bales lived in Pond Creek, Jackson County, Kentucky 1853-1920. After the death of his wife Nancy Powell in 1898, Julius married widow of Hiram Casteel, Realie Combs Casteel, Sherman’s mother, 1903 in Pond Creek, Kentucky. Their seven children were all born in Pond Creek, Jackson, Kentucky. US Census records supported. About 1921, Julius moved his family, including two step-daughters, to Hamilton, Butler County, Ohio. Julius died in there in 1923. He is buried next to his 1st wife Nancy Powell.
