Berlie Odee Scales, 72, of 3161 Horsepasture-Price Road, Ridgeway, died Monday, Dec. 8, 2003, at his home.

Born in Henry County on Oct. 19, 1931, he was a son of the late Doctor Hardy Scales and Claudia Shelton Scales.

Scales was an Army veteran who served as a paratrooper. He was a self-employed logger and farmer for 30 years; a member of American Legion, Homer Dillard Post No. 78 and a member of G.P. Watkins Masonic Lodge No. 130. He was a member of Mayo Missionary Baptist Church.

Surviving are his wife, Coretta D. Scales of the home; one daughter, Philomena McAfee of Charlotte, N.C.; two sisters, Cordelia M. Phillips of Martinsville and Ada S. Reynolds of Ridgeway; four brothers, John Lester Scales of Jamaica, N.Y., Harry Scales of East Stroudsburg, Pa., and Thomas D. Scales and Timothy A. Scales, both of Ridgeway; and one grandchild.

The funeral will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Mayo Missionary Baptist Church with the Rev. Dwight Mack officiating. Burial will be in Roselawn Burial Park.
