Mrs. Amma Baker Dies Following Lengthy Illness
Mrs. Amma Baker, a resident of Archer County since 1912, died last Friday morning at 11 o'clock at her home in this city following an illness of several months. She was stricken with a heart attack on July 3. She was brought to her home here 3 weeks ago from the Olney hospital where she had been under treatment since the heart attack. Prior to that she had been hospitalized many weeks with a broken hip.
A native of Mississippi, she was born December 31, 1869, at Oxford. As Miss Amma Short, she was married to John L. Baker with whom she came to Archer county in 1912, settling on a farm some 7 miles southeast of Archer City. The family moved into the city in 1917 after purchasing what was then known as the Kitchen Hotel at the northeast corner of the square, a frame building that is one of the landmarks of Archer City. Her husband succumbed in 1918. She continued to operate the hotel until her death.
Funeral services were conducted Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock from the First Baptist Church in this city with Rev. Olan Harmonson of Olney conducting the service. Burial was in the Archer City Cemetery.
Survivors are a daughter, Mrs. Mable Maag, Route 5, Wichita Falls; and four sons, Leon of Van Nuys CA, Loguin of Hamilton TX, Sam P. of Archer City, and Howard with the armed forces in Korea; a brother F.A. Short in Abilene; and 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
