MEMORIAL IN PLACE: A great leader & diplomat and lawyer in Cherokee history; born in the Cherokee Nation. Asst. Chief of the Cherokee Nation. A Colonel in the Civil War, he was an officer under Genl.Stand Watie's Cherokee Mounted Volunteers regiment command; captured at the Battle of Pea Ridge, he was soon released and continued to fight for the CSA. Colonel William Penn Adair, second in command of the Cherokee Mounted Rifles (CSA) under Brigadier General Stand Watie.

Part of delegation to Washington seeking to establish Cherokees and allied tribes connected to the Southern cause, to be allowed to remove from Indian Territory to Texas. Established the Texas Cherokees and Associate Bands in 1871 to pursue the aforementioned cause as well as to seek redress regarding the Treaty of Bowles Village in 1836 between the Cherokee and Twelve Associated Tribes and the Republic of Texas.

The Texas Cherokees and Associate Bands were largely made up initially by former residents of the Mount Tabor Indian Community and the town of Bellview, Texas in Rusk County.

Colonel Adair was the son of George Washington Adair and Martha "Patsy" Martin.

He married Sarah Ann McNair Adair, the daughter of Walter Scott "Red Watt" Adair and Nannie Harris. (Colonel Adair's grand parents were Walter "Black Watt" Adair, different Adair family, and Rachel Thompson.) They were married on May 15, 1804 in the Cherokee Nation (Georgia). From this union two daughters were born, Martha Carolina "Callie" Adair and Mary Elizabeth "Mamie" Adair.

He married Sarah McIntosh Drew in June of 1861 and from that union, one daughter was born, Dora Scott Adair.
