Raised on his father's farm, he attended school at Fostoria and taught school for two terms in Seneca County. He later entered Miami Medical College at Cincinnati, graduating in 1871.
He practiced three years at Van Buren in Hancock County and then moved to Bairdstown where he experienced health issues which forced him to retire until 1890, when he resumed his practice at Bloomdale with his brother, Allen Chilcote.
He married Fannie, the daughter of George and Emma (Jacques) Cooper, and they became the parents of three known children: Eva M., Florence Edna, and Russell.
