Arthur D. Wade

Surrounded by his loving family, Arthur D. Wade Sr., 79, of Gladwin passed away at home on Sept. 27, 2003 following a short illness. A rainbow was sighted in the skies at the time of his passing.

Art was born Feb. 9, 1924 to William and Bessie (Whitten) Wade in Yawkey, West Virginia. In 1937, his family moved to Gladwin County. A lifetime member of the VFW Post 11256, Art served as a platoon rifleman in the U.S. Army's 423rd Infantry during World War II. After sustaining injuries in combat in Germany, he was awarded a Purple Heart. Upon his return, he married Jessie Alma Newman on June 2, 1945. Art was a heavy equipment operator with Local 324 Operating Engineers for over 40 years. An avid bowler in his earlier years, he was inducted into the Gladwin Bowlers Hall of Fame in 1976. He also enjoyed golfing, walking and visiting with friends over a cup of coffee.

He was preceded in death by Jessie, his wife of over 44 years; two sons, Michael and William; his parents; and step-mother, Mamie (Vickers) Wade; and his in-laws, Charles and Mildred Newman.

Surviving are five children: Arthur Donald (Susan) Wade Jr. of Clare, Bonnie House of Gladwin, Elizabeth (Joel) Kilborn of Albright Shores, Helen (Jon) Kilborn of Estey, and Mary Ellen (Ben) Swinehart of Gladwin; 13 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.

Services were held Tuesday, Sept. 30 at Hall Funeral Home in Gladwin with Pastor Jim Walters officiating. Art was laid to rest next to his loving wife in Highland Cemetery in Gladwin.
