F.E. received his A.B. degree from Eureka College in 1904. In 1937, Butler University conferred on him the honorary Doctor of Divinity degree.
He married Inez Stewart on July 12, 1904, in Franklin, Illinois. They had three daughters and one son. At the time of his death, there were eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
F.E. began his career as a minister for the Disciples of Christ Church in 1904, and served at locations in Illinois, Iowa, and Indiana. He became secretary of the Board of Ministerial Relief of Christian Churches in 1918. He led the reorganization of this board, which became the Pension Fund of Disciples of Christ in 1928. F.E. worked many years for the Pension Fund, and retired as its executive secretary on December 31, 1944.
