George Washington Smith was born February 28, 1852 in Bureau or Putnam County, Illinois. George was the son of Emer Smith and Mercy Ann Aldrich Smith.

George married Mary Matilda Fosdick on November 29, 1874 in Bureau County, Illinois. From this marriage there were four children:
Francis Edwin Smith, b. September 18, 1877
Ann Elizabeth Smith, b. March 10, 1883
Bertha Lydia Smith, b. July 26, 1884
Benjamin Harrison Smith, b. October 4, 1888

After Matilda died in 1896, George needed someone to help care for his young children. He hired Libby Kenney Brandenberg, and later married her on October 18, 1897 in Bureau County, Illinois. Libby had a son, Clay Brandenberg, from a previous marriage. Clay was adopted by George and used the surname Smith.

George was a farmer and sometimes merchant, according to census records. He seems to have had the wanderlust, as he and Matilda lived in Iowa, back to Illinois, Kansas, California, back to Illinois again, and after George married Libby, they moved to Lake County, Michigan, where they settled in the Luther area.

Libby died January 5, 1923 in Luther, Michigan. On November 6, 1926, George married a third time to Catherine Stevens Mero, widow of Daniel Mero. George died January 9, 1928 in Luther, Michigan, and is buried in the Mero family plot in Pleasant Hill Cemetery.
