Charles P. "Charlie" Hicks, 86, of Blackwater, Va., and formerly of Newcomb died early Friday morning at Claiborne County Hospital in Tazewell.

He was a retired coal miner and a member of Newcomb Baptist Church.

He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Faye Hicks of Blackwater, Va.; five sons, Bert Hicks of Laurel, Ind., Clyde and L.T. Hicks both of Jellico, Ted Hicks of Caryville, Dewey Hicks of Ill.; three daughters, Mrs. Nan Daugherty of Caryville, Mrs. Ruth Hatmaker of Cincinnati, Ohio, Mrs. Aneta Waterman of Indiana; two step-sons, Calloway and Donald Livesly both of Dayton, Ohio; five step-daughters, Mrs. Marie Burchett of Dayton, Ohio, Mrs. Ella Davidson of Blackwater, Va., Mrs. Emily Schubert of Newcomb, Mrs. Lula Wade and Mrs. Rutha Sword both of Jonesville, Va.; 39 grandchildren; 42 step-grandchildren; and several great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held Sunday at Newcomb Baptist Church with the Rev. Roe Chitwood and the Rev. Odum Baker officiating. Burial was in Newcomb Cemetery.

Martin Funeral Home, LaFollette, was in charge of arrangements.

Charles was born May 4, 1886 in Claiborne County, Tennessee. He was the son of Thomas N. Hicks & Martha Ann Gibbs.
