Thomas was the son of John E and Margaret (Cousins) Adamson. He sailed to Canada with his mother and five siblings on the Ellen Austin in 1856 at the age of 15.

Thomas married Mary Ellen Mellor Jones on May 28, 1862 in Detroit, Michigan. They had the following children:

In LeMars, Iowa, Thomas was the City Weighmaster as well as the Chief of the Fire Department where he was a member for over 25 years. He served as a Supervisor for District 1 from 1893 to 1904 and served as the Chairman of the Board. He lived first on a farm and then in the 1880's moved to town due to health problems of his wife and lived at either 900 or 920 Cedar Street. Both he and his brother Charles were very active in the Masons.

After the death of his first wife, Thomas married Mrs. N.L. Greer - the former Julia Gibbs - on January 26, 1910 in Iowa.
