WILLIAM BAKER

Rose Hill, Ill., May 10, -- William Baker, a Civil war veteran, died Saturday evening, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Bowers, in his eighty-sixth year, after a three day illness of influenza and pneumonia.
Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Universalist church by Rev. E. W. Minor of Hutsonville, assisted by Rev. J. K. Dillon of Greenup, after which interment was made in the Hunt cemetery. Uncle Bill, as he was familiarly called, was a fine old gentleman, sociable, courteous and well liked by a great host of friends and acquaintances. He was one of the early settlers in this part of Crooked Creek and had constantly resided at his late home ever since the close of the Civil war.
Surviving are three children, two sons and a daughter; Frank and Charles Baker, and Mrs. John (Cora) Bowers, all of this vicinity; brother of Edgewood; half-brother, Joseph Courson of Shobonier; ten grandchildren, many other relatives and a legion of friends.

BAKER - RAY
William Baker (b. 22 May 1834, d. 8 May 1920), a Civil War veteran, serving as a Private in Co. D, 97th. Inf., came to Illinois from Ohio. He married Matilda Ray (b. 11 Mar. 1841, d. 7 Feb. 1904).
They had three children, Frank (b. 29 May 1872) married Belle Elder, and they had four children, Earl, Fred, Eugene, and Jessie.
Charles (b. 12 May 1874, d. 14 Feb. 1958) married Lulu Bliss (b. 18 Aug. 1880, d. 22 Apr. 1944) on 18 Feb. 1905, and they had three children, Thomas Charles (b. 1 Jan. 1906, d. 12 Aug. 1971), who married Sylvia Thomas (b. 16 Dec. 1914). They have two children, Thomas Gene (b. 10 Apr. 1938), who married Carolyn Dillier, and have children Bradley, Michael, and Cheryl. Judith Ann (b. 1 May 1945) is married to James Snyder, and have Scott and Julie.
Lois Lulu is Charles and Lulu's only daughter and she married Max B. Hunt.
Third child was William (b. 29 Nov. 1915, d. 11 June 1982), who married Ruth Roth (b. 8 Sep. 1914, d. 21 Jan. 1985). Both buried in Plainfield [Jasper County, Illinois] Cem[etery]. They had two daughters.
Cora was William and Matilda's third child (b. 23 Oct. 1877, d. 6 Sept. 1961) who on 5 May 1900 married John Bowers (b. 31 Mar. 1875, d. 16 June 1952). They had two daughters, Nova (b. 25 Sept. 1912) who on 14 Dec. 1935 married Clyle Fouty (b. 3 Feb. 1912) and Blanche (b. 26 Jan. 1906, d. 22 Oct. 1957), who married Norval McCrillis in 1940. Blanche and Norval buried in Robinson [Crawford County, Illinois], New Cem[etery].
From the obituary written at the time of Matilda Baker's death, we read "Sunday morning the bad news was carried from house to house that Mrs. Wm. Baker was dead. Deceased was the wife of Wm. Baker, living two and one half miles northeast of Rose Hill [Illinois]. Mrs. Baker was born 11 Mar. 1841; married to Mr. Baker 3 Nov. 1861; died Sunday morn. 7 Feb. 1904. Her funeral was preached by Rev. J.K. Dillon of Greenup [Illinois] at the Universalist Church, east of Rose Hill [Jasper County, Illinois], of which she was a member, having joined in 1883, when the church was organized.
"Mrs. Baker was all sunshine, all joy, when in health. Go to her home, and you always found a welcome. She made no distinction between the rich and the poor, and never did she turn a hungry soul away empty-handed. Look upon the walls of her home, and your eyes would behold the beauties of art and nature. This wife and mother will be most sadly missed, and having been a companion for forty-three years, always ready to assist, and make the path of life pleasant, sharing both trials and hardships. She leaves a good and kind husband, three children; Frank, Charles, and Cora Bowers, one brother, Abraham Ray, beside other relatives and many friends. Her body was laid to rest Monday in the Hunt [Jasper County, Illinois] graveyard."

I got the dates for the deaths of Harriet Baker Swick and Peter Swick from a biography written for their son Lewis Swick.

Lucinda Jane Miller Ortman was supposedly the daughter of Conrad Baker's second wife Mary Swick, and a man named Benjamin Miller, before Mary Swick ever married Conrad Baker.
I have found a 3 June 1883 Jasper County, Illinois marriage record for a Lucinda Jane Miller and a John B. Kester that states that the mother of Lucinda J. Vannatta was Mary Swick and that her father was Benjamin Miller. Lucinda Miller was married to Jacob Ortman, John Ray, Ezekiel Nichols, Aaron Vanatta, and John B. Kester.

I haven't found out where or when Catherine Baker died or if she lived long enough to ever get married.

Rose Hill, Ill., May 10, -- William Baker, a Civil war veteran, died Saturday evening, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. John Bowers, in his eighty-sixth year, after a three day illness of influenza and pneumonia.
Funeral services were conducted Monday morning at 10:30 o'clock at the Universalist church by Rev. E. W. Minor of Hutsonville, assisted by Rev. J. K. Dillon of Greenup, after which interment was made in the Hunt cemetery. Uncle Bill, as he was familiarly called, was a fine old gentleman, sociable, courteous and well liked by a great host of friends and acquaintances. He was one of the early settlers in this part of Crooked Creek and had constantly resided at his late home ever since the close of the Civil war.
Surviving are three children, two sons and a daughter; Frank and Charles Baker, and Mrs. John (Cora) Bowers, all of this vicinity; brother of Edgewood; half-brother, Joseph Courson of Shobonier; ten grandchildren, many other relatives and a legion of friends.

BAKER - RAY
William Baker (b. 22 May 1834, d. 8 May 1920), a Civil War veteran, serving as a Private in Co. D, 97th. Inf., came to Illinois from Ohio. He married Matilda Ray (b. 11 Mar. 1841, d. 7 Feb. 1904).
They had three children, Frank (b. 29 May 1872) married Belle Elder, and they had four children, Earl, Fred, Eugene, and Jessie.
Charles (b. 12 May 1874, d. 14 Feb. 1958) married Lulu Bliss (b. 18 Aug. 1880, d. 22 Apr. 1944) on 18 Feb. 1905, and they had three children, Thomas Charles (b. 1 Jan. 1906, d. 12 Aug. 1971), who married Sylvia Thomas (b. 16 Dec. 1914). They have two children, Thomas Gene (b. 10 Apr. 1938), who married Carolyn Dillier, and have children Bradley, Michael, and Cheryl. Judith Ann (b. 1 May 1945) is married to James Snyder, and have Scott and Julie.
Lois Lulu is Charles and Lulu's only daughter and she married Max B. Hunt.
Third child was William (b. 29 Nov. 1915, d. 11 June 1982), who married Ruth Roth (b. 8 Sep. 1914, d. 21 Jan. 1985). Both buried in Plainfield [Jasper County, Illinois] Cem[etery]. They had two daughters.
Cora was William and Matilda's third child (b. 23 Oct. 1877, d. 6 Sept. 1961) who on 5 May 1900 married John Bowers (b. 31 Mar. 1875, d. 16 June 1952). They had two daughters, Nova (b. 25 Sept. 1912) who on 14 Dec. 1935 married Clyle Fouty (b. 3 Feb. 1912) and Blanche (b. 26 Jan. 1906, d. 22 Oct. 1957), who married Norval McCrillis in 1940. Blanche and Norval buried in Robinson [Crawford County, Illinois], New Cem[etery].
From the obituary written at the time of Matilda Baker's death, we read "Sunday morning the bad news was carried from house to house that Mrs. Wm. Baker was dead. Deceased was the wife of Wm. Baker, living two and one half miles northeast of Rose Hill [Illinois]. Mrs. Baker was born 11 Mar. 1841; married to Mr. Baker 3 Nov. 1861; died Sunday morn. 7 Feb. 1904. Her funeral was preached by Rev. J.K. Dillon of Greenup [Illinois] at the Universalist Church, east of Rose Hill [Jasper County, Illinois], of which she was a member, having joined in 1883, when the church was organized.
"Mrs. Baker was all sunshine, all joy, when in health. Go to her home, and you always found a welcome. She made no distinction between the rich and the poor, and never did she turn a hungry soul away empty-handed. Look upon the walls of her home, and your eyes would behold the beauties of art and nature. This wife and mother will be most sadly missed, and having been a companion for forty-three years, always ready to assist, and make the path of life pleasant, sharing both trials and hardships. She leaves a good and kind husband, three children; Frank, Charles, and Cora Bowers, one brother, Abraham Ray, beside other relatives and many friends. Her body was laid to rest Monday in the Hunt [Jasper County, Illinois] graveyard."

Harriet Baker Swick died in 1864 and so far I haven't been able to find out where she was living when she died or where she is buried. Harriet Baker Swick married Peter Swick. Peter Swick died in 1856 at an unknown location and his grave location is also unknown. I got the dates for the deaths of Harriet Baker Swick and Peter Swick from a biography written for their son Lewis Swick.

Lucinda Jane Miller Ortman was supposedly the daughter of Conrad Baker's second wife Mary Swick, and a man named Benjamin Miller, before Mary Swick ever married Conrad Baker.
I have found a 3 June 1883 Jasper County, Illinois marriage record for a Lucinda Jane Miller and a John B. Kester that states that the mother of Lucinda J. Vannatta was Mary Swick and that her father was Benjamin Miller. Lucinda Miller was married to Jacob Ortman, John Ray, Ezekiel Nichols, Aaron Vanatta, and John B. Kester.
