TURTLE LAKE - Herman W. Mees, 79, Turtle Lake, passed from this life to his heavenly home on Nov. 2, 2005, at a Bismarck hospital. Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday, Nov. 7, at Turtle Lake Baptist Church with the Rev. Dennis Gellerman officiating. Interment will be held at 3 p.m. at the North Dakota Veterans Cemetery, south of Mandan.

Visitation will be held from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Goetz Funeral Home, Turtle Lake, and will continue Monday, one hour prior to time of service at the church.

Herman William Mees Jr. was born Jan. 8, 1926, at Hebron, the son of Herman and Elsa (Brecht) Mees. He was reared on a farm near Hebron and attended at the Assumption Abbey in Richardton. Herman left school in his senior year and enlisted in the U.S. Navy. He served in the South Pacific during World War II from 1944 to 1946. Following his honorable discharge, Herman returned to finish his senior year of high school and graduated from Mott High School in 1947. In May 1947, he married Adeline Luithle and to this union seven children were born. Herman managed the Mott Elevator from 1947 to 1957. In 1957, he and his family moved to Bismarck, where he was employed as a plumber with the M. Welch & Son Plumbing Co. He married Arlene (Bauer) Schatz on August 28, 1982 and the couple made their home in the Bismarck-Mandan area. He retired from M. Welch & Sons Plumbing after 34 years of service and became employed as a maintenance supervisor with Dan's Super Valu until 1993.

In September 1993, Herman and Arlene moved to Turtle Lake to spend their retirement years. In retirement, he enjoyed hunting and fishing, and continued to do some plumbing work, as that was his passion. In 1999, his health began to fail and eventually he became bound to his home.

Herman was a member of the VFW Post of Mott and served as post commander for several years. He was a member of the VFW Post of Bismarck and served with the VFW Color Guard. Herman accepted Jesus Christ as his Savior and was baptized at Century Baptist Church in Bismarck. While living in Turtle Lake, he and Arlene attended the Turtle Lake Baptist Church and he was a member of the Turtle Lake American Legion Post.

He is survived by his wife, Arlene Mees, Turtle Lake; two daughters, Cynthia (Ross) Lewis, Austin, Texas, and LaDonna (Richard) Richardson, Oak Harbor, Wash.; five sons, Jim (Irena), Dallas, David (Carmon), Mandan, Ardell (Tammy), Bismarck, Arlin, Seattle, and Calvin (Tarja), Cedar Hills, Texas; three stepdaughters, Patty (Milton) Albrecht, Turtle Lake, Sheila (Stanley) Olson, Turtle Lake, and Brenda (Paul) Carmon, Puyallup, Wash.; 15 grandchildren; 13 step-grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; one step-great-grandchild; two sisters, Marlene (Lud) Feist and Sandra Mees, all of Bismarck; three brothers, Sanford (Corrine) Mees, Bismarck, Ted (Shirley) Mees, Bismarck, and Tom (Jan) Mees, Idaho; two sisters-in-law, Clara Mees, Bismarck, and Linda Mees, Wilton; and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his wife Arlene's siblings and his father-in-law, Gottlieb Bauer, who he spent many hours hunting and fishing with.

He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, LaDarana, Selkirk "Bunny" and Hillard; and and his mother-in-law, Elsie Bauer.
