David was the son of John Franklin Coffman and Elizabeth Irvin (Cobb) Coffman. John and Elizabeth came to Hopkins County, Kentucky with their parents as as children.

David's paternal grandparents were Isaac & Anna (French) Coffman, who married in Pennsylvania in 1775. They moved to Mercer County, KY, then later settled in Hopkins County in 1808.

David's maternal grandparents were Howell Cobb and Leah (Williams) Cobb who married in 1811 in Jefferson Co., Tennessee and moved to Hopkins County.

David married Elizabeth 'Eliza' P. Cannon about 1868.

They had two sons, who died young and are buried in New Salem Cemetery, along with David's parents, John & Elizabeth Coffman.
