John P. Burr, 80, resident of this community for the past 60 years, passed away at his home here at 5 o’clock Thursday evening, following a stroke which he suffered the preceding Sunday morning. He had been unconscious practically all of the time since suffering the stroke.
Mr. Burr came to this community in 1880 and farmed in Lincoln township until March, 1926, when he moved to Lone Tree, where he had since lived. He was one of the original stockholders of the Lone Tree Savings bank, when it was organized nearly 50 years ago, and was president of the bank at the time of his death. He was always active is community affairs.
Funeral services were held at two o'clock Saturday afternoon from the Reformed church, in charge of the Rev. E. A. Voss. Music for the service was furnished by a quartet composed of Mrs. Myra Wiese, Mrs. W. H. Yakish, Virgil Wittmer and W. H. Yakish, who sang ”Lead, Kindly Light”, “Asleep in Jesus,” and "Abide With Me”, accompanied on the organ by Mrs. Chas. Spevacek.
Pallbearers were James H. Bell, G. B. Kirchner, H. C. Buell, A. E. Baumer, E. D. Carl, J. E. Ashton, George Mueller and H. A. McMillan. Flowers were in charge of Mrs. J. W. Larew, Mrs. E. C. Green, Miss Ethyl McCullough and Miss Velma Schabilion.
Burial was in the Lone Tree cemetery.
John P. Burr was born November 22, 1860, at Edgington, Illinois, in Rock Island County, of Massachusetts parentage, the son of Nelson and Lydia Percival Burr. He was the youngest and last survivor of a family of five. Three brothers and one sister preceeded him in death.
In 18S0, at the age of twenty, he came with his parents to Johnson County and located on the farm now the home of Lloyd Burr. In February 20, 1884, he was united in marriage to Miss Anna Mary Stock. They continued living on the same farm for 42 years until they moved into their new home, in Lone Tree in March, 1926.
A happy occasion was the observance of Mr. and Mrs. Burr’s Golden Wedding anniversary, celebrated on February 20, 1934.
Mr. Burr was ever active in community affairs while residing on the farm in Lincoln Township He was one of the original stockholders of the Lone Tree Savings Bank and was the last of these original stockholders where he was president for the past seven years.
He was a member of the Reformed Church since April 14, 1889, when he and Mrs. Burr joined the church together. He was not only a faithful attendant at the church service but also was a very faithful member of the Sunday School.
On Sunday morning, January 26, Mr. Burr suffered a stroke which paralyzed his left side. He regained consciousness only a few times Sunday and knew that Pearle was with him. He remained unconscious until Thursday evening, January 30, 1941, about five o’clock when he slept gently away in spite of medical aid and watchful ministry of his family.
He was 80 years, two months and eight days of age.
Mrs. Burr died October 21, 1937.
He leaves to mourn his departure, Pearle at home, Mrs. Emma M. Kile of West Liberty, Vernon E. and Lloyd F. Burr of Lone Tree, and Mrs. Alice L. Musser of Walford. One son, George S., husband of Mrs. Mable Burr, preceeded him in death on January 29, 1919. Nine grandchildren, Raymond, John and Howard Kile, Letha, Dale, Ruth, Margaret Ann, Junior Burr, and Jerry Burr Musser also survive him.
