He lived in Worthington as a young man and then became a farmer in Peru, Massachusetts. He married MARY E. ACKERT (previously married to James W. ASCHA/ASKEY, and the mother of three) 1 January 1854 in Worthington (Hampshire Co.), Massachusetts; she died of apoplexy 10 November 1881 in Peru.

Ward N. Stone died of cancer of the face, age 83, on 3 January 1914 in East Providence, Rhode Island, where he had been living with his daughter, Hattie MacDuff and her family for about five years. His body was shipped to Peru, Massachusetts for burial on 6 January 1914.

"The funeral of Ward N. Stone, aged 83, for many years a resident of Peru, was held from the Congregational church in that town Tuesday [6 January 1914]. Mr. Stone died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Fred S. McDuff [sic; MacDuff] of East Providence, R. I., Saturday [3 January 1914]. Rev. C. E. Smith conducted the funeral services and burial was in the Peru town cemetery at the Center. The bearers were his three sons and Charles Stevens. Mr. Stone was a member and regular attendant of the Peru church. He sang many years in the choir and used to enjoy attending the singing school that used to be held winters. He was a resident of the town for about 54 years, going to live with his daughter five years ago. He is survived by three sons, E. B. Stone of this city [Pittsfield], Bert Stone of Worthington, Joseph of State Line and Mrs. Fred S. McDuff of East Providence, R. I."
Visitors to the cemetery in 2009 and 2010 were unable to find a tombstone for Ward Stone. It is thought that he was buried beside the grave of his first wife, Mary E. Ackert Stone.
