Henry worked as a farm laborer for other families all his life, moving around western Massachusetts:
On the 1850 census Henry was living in Worthington (Hampshire Co.) as a laborer with the Burr family; 1855 in Middlefield (Hampshire Co.) with the Loveland family; 1860, same place, with the Church family; 1865 in Plainfield (Hampshire Co.), with the Whitmarsh family; 1870 in Conway (Franklin Co.), with the Osman family; and in 1880 in Ashfield (Franklin Co.), with the Edson family.
He was a bachelor when he died in 1882 at the residence of Willis N. Howes in Ashfield and was an "outdoor pauper" with a settlement (payment of expenses) from Windsor, Massachusetts, the hometown of his father. This stipend was meant to repay the expenses of strangers offering him room and board.
He died, age 58 years, 7 months, and 10 days of age, of chronic gastritis, according to his two death registrations in Windsor and Ashfield; his brother Francis claimed in 1884 that he had died of tuberculosis (CW pension record). Henry was buried near the graves of his mother, his brother Newell, and his grandparents at the Turner Cemetery in Savoy Center. The nice tombstone was no doubt erected by his siblings, Ward, Frank, and/or Lizzie.
