Albert Heaps, 90, died on Aug. 25, 2004.

He was born on April 30, 1914, in Smithfield, to George and Sarah Lavina Olney Heaps. He attended Smithfield Elementary and North Cache High School. As a young man, he worked on the family farm. He always talked of the wonderful times with his dad and brothers on the farm and the bond of love that developed between them.

He married Donna Godfrey on Nov. 29, 1952, in Winnemucca, Nev. Albert and Donna were sealed in the Logan LDS Temple on Dec. 9, 1964. Donna had five daughters from a previous marriage, and Albert had three daughters from a previous marriage as well. Albert loved and raised these girls. Albert and Donna were also blessed with two loving sons.

Albert was an avid fisherman. One of his favorite pastimes was fishing with his girls and especially his two sons. He loved spending time with his family. He worked at the defense depot and Remington Arms during World War II. He later became a skilled carpenter, being known as the "best of the best" by many of his peers. He worked as a carpenter for 50 years. Albert was member of the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners of America, Local 184. He worked on large construction jobs throughout Utah, the United States and overseas. He worked on projects such as the McKay Dee Hospital, the Folsom Dam in California and airbases in Algiers. He always looked forward to construction projects close to home so that he could be with his family.

Albert was a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. He supported both sons on LDS missions. He served as a faithful home teacher for many years and a temple worker for six years in the Logan LDS Temple. At the time of his passing, he was a high priest in the Smithfield 14th Ward.

He is survived by his two sons, Kent (Mary Lou) Heaps of Lakewood, Calif., and Kevin (Chris) Heaps of Logan; three daughters, Shirley (Steve) Gracek of Denver, Colo., Vella (Blaine) Durrant of Lewiston and Alberta (Maurice) Mather of Smithfield; and five stepdaughters, Mary (Sam) Riter of South Ogden, Carole (Ken) Smith of Sandy, Faye Skabelund of Mesa, Ariz., Maureen (Carlos) Elwood of Ogden and Nansi (Don) Hobbs of Mesa, Ariz.
He was the last surviving member of a large family. He was preceded in death by his wife; sister, Vella (Marlow) Woodward; brothers, Alvin, George, Golden, Orrie, Orvil and Willard; stepsister, Sarah Mae Downs (Joseph) Read; and stepbrothers, Bill and Roscoe. He had 50 grandchildren, 100 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, in the Smithfield LDS 2nd Ward Chapel, 175 S. 100 West, in Smithfield, with Bishop Steven Jenson conducting. Friends and family may call from 6 to 8 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 29, at Nelson Funeral Home, 85 S. Main, Smithfield, and from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m. on Monday, Aug. 30, 2004, at the church.
