She was born on Oct. 4, 1917, in Burke County, to the late Ellis "Doc" Yancey and Rosa Lail Yancey.
Ethel was a member of Grandview Baptist Church. She was also preceded in death by the love of her life and husband, Raymond Cline Baxter; her brothers Joe Yancey, Ellis Yancey Jr.; and sisters Martha McLawhorn and Mary Hildebran.
Ethel spent most of her life in Burke County, several years in the Pacific Northwest, and a brief time in New Jersey. She retired from Broughton Hospital, where she worked many years as a nurse's aide. She will be remembered by co-workers, friends, and her Lake James "family" as a loving, compassionate, and generous woman, blessed with both wisdom and common sense. Ethel could tell you a beautiful story about her life, drawing you into a different time and place. She also remembered you once she met you, and contributed to her community as a giver to all causes she deemed worthy.
She leaves as her legacy her brothers, Cline Yancey of Glen Alpine and Marvin Yancey of Columbia, S.C., and their families; and her stepsons Gene, Hill, Robert and Ray Baxter and their families. She will always be remembered by Dewey and Judy Fox, Morganton, and by too many other friends to mention individually.
Receiving of friends will take place from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Kirksey Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be held at 11 a.m. on Tuesday in the Chapel of Kirksey Funeral Home.
Interment will follow at Burke Memorial Park.
