Born Aug. 2, 1946, he was the son of the late Tommy Lee and Faye Jeanette Jarrett Childers.
A decorated Air Force veteran, he served in Vietnam. He was a 1965 graduate of Fred T. Foard High School and later worked for Getrag Gears. He was a huge racing fan and was blessed by his sponsorship of Bakary, a Mali African boy.
His wife, B.J. Childers of the home; two stepdaughters, Lisa Penley of Newton and Lori Baker of Lincolnton; two stepsons, Tommy Knox of Denver, N.C., and Douglas Fraley of Newton; three sisters, Patsy Hadsall of Newton, Marilyn Childers of Hickory and Gail Ellis of Hildebran; four brothers, Randall Childers of Hickory, Clinton Childers and Dennis Childers, both of Maiden, and Gray Childers of Newton; and a grandchild, Morgan Lane, survive him.
A son, Michael Lee Childers, and a brother, Joe David Childers, preceded him in death.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 23, 2009, at Wesley Chapel United Methodist Church in Newton, with Pastor Bobby Petree officiating.
Burial will follow in the church cemetery, with military honors provided by members of American Legion Post 16.
