A messenger on horseback brought the news to him, on the farm, that Fort Sumter had been fired upon by the Confederates [April 12, 1861].
In the "History of Wabash County" Levi Emery is mentioned as being the first volunteer from the Township of Highland, and the "ladies presented him with a banner."
His son Cleon had this to say about him:
Levi had two different military experiences: The first extending from May 26, 1861, when he was mustered in as a volunteer in Company I of the First Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment, and concluding with his discharge in April 18, 1862 "for wounds received at Bull Run (First Battle)" [July 21, 1861 in Prince William Co, VA]. The second period, when after being drafted May 26, 1864, he was sent to Arkansas where the Third Minnesota Infantry Regiment did garrison duty for over a year.
[His son Edwin was born in Sept 1864 while he was away at war]
His mother lived in Wisconsin while he was in Minnesota.

"Levi Emery an old and respected citizen of this county died at his home in Highland last Tuesday night at the age of 61 years and four months. He has been in very poor health since early in the spring. About two weeks ago he felt that he was improving and continued so until a few days before his death when he began to grow weaker and gradually gave up life's hold and passed to his eternal resting place.
Mr. Emery was born in New York City in May 1834. When a child his parents came west settling in Wisconsin where they resided a number of years. In 1860 he moved to this state ever making his home here since with the exception of the three years he served in the army.
He first enlisted in the 1st Minnesota regiment in 1861 as a three months man and was honorably discharged just thirty years ago Thursday, the day of the funeral.
In 1864 Mr. Emery was married to Miss Ursula W. Metcalf, to which union nine children were born, seven of whom, and his wife, survive him. Three sons, his three daughters and his wife being present at his bedside during his last hours. Chas., the oldest son who resides in Kansas was unable to be present.
Mr. Emery was a devoted husband, a loving father and a kind neighbor. While living in Wisconsin he united with the Presbyterian Church but after locating in this state he became a member of the M. E. Church with which society he remained until his death. The family will receive the deepest sympathy of the community in their bereavement. Funeral services were conducted by Rev. Gillis in the M. E. Church Thursday afternoon."
