Jewel Ruth Worthington, 62, of San Marcos, Texas, passed away peacefully in the arms of her daughter Thursday, Nov. 6, 2008, in the Central Texas Medical Center in San Marcos. She was born at home in Smiley Dec. 13, 1945, to Jess Richard and Jewel Claudie Allison Worthington.

Ruth graduated from Smiley High School and Durham Business College. She was a very loving and devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend. She married Carl Elmer Atkins Jr. Dec. 12, 1964, and attended the Baptist church. She worked for years throughout the area with many churches and civic organizations. While this work was important to Ruth, most important was raising her family and educating her two daughters. Ruth was a very talented storyteller and writer of short stories.

Ruth was preceded in death by her parents and three brothers, Frank, Jack, and Willard Worthington.

She is survived by her husband of 43 years, Carl E. Atkins; her daughters, Heidi Atkins and her boyfriend James Rogers of San Marcos, and Angela Atkins and her son Jackson Atkins, both of Wimberley; her sister, Roberta Cole of Floresville; her brother, Jerry Worthington and wife Genevieve of Floresville; and a number of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and a host of friends.

The family would like to thank all of Ruth's doctors, nurses, and caregivers on the fourth floor at Central Texas Medical Center for all their help, concern, and tender care they gave.

Mom went in peace and for Mom and all of her family, a promise has been fulfilled at her passing: "Today you will be with me in paradise."

Ruth was buried Nov. 10 in the Bundick Cemetery near Smiley. A memorial service was held at 3 p.m. at her grave Friday, Nov. 14, with the Rev. Michael Cowey officiating.
