After the death of her husband Richard Carter in November of 1846, Hannah was left on the edge of civilization at Mt. Pisgua Iowa and no doubt had much trepidation for her life and that of her young children Mary Trueworthy, Samuel, and Angelia.

Her forth child Franklin was born in February of 1848 and there are still many questions unanswered as to the biological father of Franklin.

After the death of her husband Richard Carter in November of 1846, Hannah was left on the edge of civilization and no doubt had much trepidation for her life and that of her young children Mary Trueworthy, Samuel, and Angelia. Then in February of 1848 she gave birth to Franklin Fitzfield.

Who is the father of Franklin? This has been the question for decades.

Family tradition has long held that Franklin was the biological son of a Mr. Enslow. This position is articulated in Carter Pioneers of Provo, Utah compiled by Arthur D. Coleman published in 1966. There is a record of an Elster/Elza Endslow born in 1819 in Illinois and dying in 1849 at Council Bluffs, Pottawatomie County, Iowa in November of 1849. But there is no record of a marriage to Hannah, nor anything suggesting that this Mr. Endslow and Hannah ever connected. We simply have no proof of this relationship. The tradition may have been started about this Mr. Enslow out of convenience to explain Franklin's birth without having a legal husband in the picture for Hannah.

We have record of her marrying Cornelius Brown on 13 December 1849 and find her in the 1850 Census with Mr. Brown and three children Mary, Samuel, and Franklin (Angelia died about 1848). Hannah died of smallpox in April of 1852 leaving Cornelius a widower with 3 small children. Cornelius Brown married again in August 1852 Sarah Hamer the widow of John Worsley but left her when she chose to follow the Saints west. He abondened the children and returned to and died in his home state of New York in 1869.

After the death of Hannah in 1852 and the eventual departure of Mr. Brown, the York/Carter family seems to have passed Franklin off on the William and Matilda Martindale family for the trip west to Utah, and the Martindale family in Toole Utah is where Franklin lived until he was about 13 or 14 years old. It is even alleged that Brigham Young made this assignment of Franklin to the Martindale’s. He ran away from them, claiming the Mrs. Martindale was physically abusive, and found his way to the Santaquin area of Utah and began a relationship with his Carter family members.

What we do know is that Franklin is not the biological son of Richard Carter. Nevertheless, Franklin as an adult chose to take upon him the Carter name and had himself sealed when he was 60 years old to Richard Carter on 8 March 1918. Again, there is a family tradition that Brigham Young suggested to Franklin that he at some date in time cause himself to be sealed to Richard Carter. Some suggest that he was sealed at the time of his marriage to Hannah Butterfield, but the record shows that the sealing to Richard Carter as his father took place 32 years after the marriage.

The REST of the STORY. In these times of DNA testing and understanding, Franklin's direct line grandson Willis "Keith" Carter and I have taken at least 3 DNA tests that show that he is blood kin to me (Dale Bradley York), a direct line descendant of Aaron M. York. The relationship is with a zero-degree separation in three separate haplogroups. Keith and I have identical Y-DNA with no mutations on the part of the Y chromosome. That is how the Y chromosome works - it is passed down unchanged from generation to generation through male descendants. This is as conclusive as my brother and I being born of the same biological father. I for one, am not qualified to argue otherwise. The DNA test seems to be quite compelling.

IF, Aaron M. York did father Franklin with Hannah, then there is no doubt why the family "adopted" Franklin to another family, the Martindales. This is one of those areas of Family History, where we cannot judge the morality of history, we simply must let the facts be facts, and "Facts are stubborn things".
