Thomas Boyd's antecedents are difficult to trace. His ancestors were probably Northern Irish as he was definitely Protestant. He was born in Maryland and probably came with his father Thomas Sr. and family to Pennsylvania sometime in the early 19th century. He made a good marriage as the Howe family was well known in the county. He was a weaver. Family stories recall he had a fine home, carriage house and separate weaving studio when he lived in Perry County, Pennsylvania.
After his wife Susannah died in 1855, he moved to Darke County, Ohio, where his son William had moved. He remarried to Rachel Paulus and lived in his own home. Rachel died sometime in 1860. According to his granddaughter Emma Shatto's memoirs written in 1949 he came to live with his daughter Rebecca Ann Boyd Shatto and family in early 1860 at their farm near Angola, Steuben County, Indiana. Emma, a very young girl, remembered him as an old man who could be rather sharp with her mother Rebecca who was infinitely patient with her father. Also that she, Emma, didn't get along well with him because she was shy, wouldn't make up to him and that he hated her kitties - the perspective of a 6 year old. Rebecca told Emma that he had been a very good father and had interceded on her behalf many times with her overbearing and demanding mother, so be please be patient with your grandfather.
Thomas lived with daughter Rebecca Shatto's family until about 1870 when the Shattos left for points further west. As they were going by wagon, Thomas was too frail to endure the trip.
