George H. Aldrich.

George H. Aldrich was born at Scio, Alleghany, county New York [sic] September 29, 1831 and died at his home four and one half [sic] miles northeast of Fountain Green, Ill., on Thursday Jan. 16 at 8 p. m., being 81 years 3 months and 17 days old.

He was the second child of eight children born to Mary W. and Horace Aldrich. Of these Mary and Elizabeth only survive.

At the age of 9 years he came to Illinois with his parents and settled at Pleasant Valley near Colchester, Ill. Living there a short time, they moved to Warsaw, Ill., and from there in a short time moved to the locality which has since been his home.

He was one of the pioneer settlers of Hancock county having been reared to manhood amid the wild scenes of the frontier, sharing with the family the hardships and privations which come to those who make their home in an undevealoped [sic] region.

This wrong period of 70 years has wrought many changes in the country which he often spoke of as his memory was unusually good and his mind continued perfect to the end.

In health he was very industrious and there are many pieces of furniture about the old home that are the work of his hand.

His education was better than most of those that grew up in that early day, which he continued by reading for he kept posted on what was going on in our country and on almost any subject we wished to enquire we could find out about it by asking father.

He was a good neighbor and citizen, perfectly honest in his dealings with men.

He was married in 1858 to Mary Goodale and to this union nine children were born, two dying in infancy. The seven living are Mrs. R. B. Booker of Augusta, Ill., Mrs. W. S. Coleman of Granger, Mo., Mrs. A. R. Conkey of Blandinsville, Ill., Douglas of Dallas, Texas, George of LaHarpe and Horace and John at home.

Funeral services were held at the residence on Saturday conducted by Rev. Shaw, burial at Fountain Green.
