ELIZABETH WHITE

Mrs. Elizabeth White died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Mary Ferris, east of Carthage on Wednesday morning, January 28. Mrs. White was more than 80 years old and has been feeble for some time. Her husband preceded her in death several years ago and she has since made her home with her children. She leaves to sorrow for her death two daughters, Mrs. Mary Ferris and Mrs. Nancy Keys, and two sons George and Alfred White, the latter a prominent farmer living south of town.

The funeral arrangements have not been made as we go to press.

Mrs. White was one of the race of noble women who were pioneers in building up the country that has been her home and is highly respected and will be greatly mourned by a large circle of old and loving friends.~A subsequent obituary from another paper stated that Elizabeth was one of five women who raised the funds to establish the Central Church near the White home in Hire Township. Her funeral services were conducted at that church prior to her burial in Central Cemetery.

This obituary also stated that when Elizabeth came to Hancock County with her parents, they first settled in Warsaw, then moved to a farm 4 miles east of Fountain Green. The obituary for Elizabeth's older brother, George, reported that his parents initially settled at Pleasant Valley near [present-day] Colchester, Illinois, shortly thereafter moved to Warsaw, and then soon to the farm east of Fountain Green. There was no Colchester town until after it was laid out in 1855.
