Dr. Beard, Educator, Dies at 71


IRVING - Dr. John Lee Beard, 71 of 404 East 7th Street, former superintendent of the Irving public schools, died here Thursday.

Beard was a native of Hamilton, Hamilton County. He received his bachelor of arts degree from Howard Payne University at Brownwood, his master of arts from Hardin-Simmons University of Texas.

Dr. Beard formerly served as vice-president of Texas A&I and of Oklahoma City University and superintendent of schools at Childress and Wellington, as well as at Irving.

He is survived by his wife, Myrtle, a son, three brothers and a sister.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday in the First United Methodist Church of Irving. Burial will be in Restland Memorial Park in Dallas.


Survived by wife, Mrs. Myrtle Beard, Irving; sons, Lewis Beard, Dallas; brothers, Truman Beard, Fort Worth, LeRoy Beard, Goldwaithe, Texas, T. E. Beard, Canyon, Texas; sister Mrs. Joe Burton, Arlington; three grandchildren, Kimberly Beard, Carroll Lee Beard, Leslie Beard.

He was married to Myrtle Grimes on 5 Sep 1928 in Brown County, Texas.
