U.S. Congressman. He attended Pennsylvania College, studied law, was admitted to the bar in 1849 and commenced to practice law in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He was a member of the Pennsylvania State House of Representatives, (1852-53, 56) and served in the Pennsylvania State Senate in 1860. In 1871, he was appointed by President Grant naval officer at the Port of Philadelphia, serving until 1875 and elected as a Republican to the Forty-ninth and Fiftieth Congresses, serving (1885-89). An unsuccessful candidate for reelection, he died shortly after leaving office.
