Bill was the son of Samuel P. Snodgrass Sr. and Elizabeth Ellen Barnes. He came to Macoupin County, Illinois, about 1885, and there married (1) Armilda E. Hart 7 March 1888. They moved to Kansas about 1891, where they stayed about eight years, then briefly returned to Sullivan County, Tennessee, before settling permanently in South Otter Township, Macoupin County, Illinois. Bill and Armilda had six children: Ora and Fletcher, born in Illinois, and Noye C., Zona, Sewel and Bryan, born in Kansas.

Armilda died in 1903, and Bill married (2) Matilda Guinn 14 November 1910 in Sullivan County, Tennessee. They had one child--William Snodgrass--and Matilda died, possibly in childbirth, 20 August 1916.

Sometime between 1917 and 1920, Bill married (3) Mary Ann Lady in Macoupin County, Illinois. Bill operated a coal mine for a number of years near Gillespie, returning to Sullivan County frequently to visit family. Bill and "Anna," as Mary Ann was called, had two children: Cecilia and Reta.
