She was the daughter of William M. "Bill" Snodgrass and his second wife, Matilda "Tilda" (Guinn) Snodgrass. Her mother died when she was five years old, and she was apparently raised or adopted by her uncle John Snodgrass and aunt Lola (Remick) Snodgrass.

She is named sister Rita Piatt in the undated obituary of her brother William (died 31 Dec 2008), son of William & Matilda, whose obituary differentiated between sister (just Reta) and all other siblings, who where called half-brothers and half-sisters.

In the obituary dated 23 Apr 1971 of Cecelia (Snodgrass) Hughes she is called sister Miss Rita Snodgrass (obituary did not differentiate between siblings and half-siblings), and in the obituary dated 26 Jan 1972 of Mrs. Zona (Snodgrass) Cobb she is called half-sister Miss Rita Snodgrass.
